Tiruchirapalli, 1996: The Jambukeswarar temple sacred tank 2.

Description

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu: The Jambukeswarar temple is dedicated to deity Shiva, and it is one of the five major Hindu temples dedicated to this deity in Tamil Nadu. These five temples correspond to the five elements, and the Jambukeswarar temple is the one that represents water. As many other Hindu temples in the South of India it is an example of Dravidian architecture, but it is particularly impressive. In particular, it dates back to the 2nd century and it has five enclosures. Here a view of a part of the sacred temple tank, with the long line of columns above the characteristic small steps that reflects itself on the water surface, by making a beautiful reflected image, and a hall of sculpted pillars above it. This is the enlargement of part of the scan of a slide taken in July-August, 1996.
