Tiruchirapalli, 1996: Inside the Jambukeswarar temple 3.

Description

1996, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu: The Jambukeswarar temple is dedicated to deity Shiva, and it is one of the five major Hindu temples dedicated to this deity in Tamil Nadu. These five temples correspond to the five elements, and the Jambukeswarar temple is the one that represents water. As many other Hindu temples in the South of India it is an example of Dravidian architecture, but it is particularly impressive. In particular, it dates back to the 2nd century and it has five enclosures. Here a view that has been taken inside the temple, with the exterior of a hall with sculpted pillars in the background, the bas relief of an elephant on the wall, and a grazing gout in foreground. This is the scan of a slide taken in July-August, 1996.
