Tiruchirapalli, 1996: Inside the Jambukeswarar temple 1.

Description

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu: The Jambukeswarar temple is dedicated to deity Shiva, and it is one of the five major Hindu temples dedicated to this deity in Tamil Nadu. These five temples correspond to the five elements, and the Jambukeswarar temple is the one that represents water. As many other Hindu temples in the South of India it is an example of Dravidian architecture, but it is particularly impressive. In particular, it dates back to the 2nd century and it has five enclosures. Here a general view that has been taken while walking within one of these enclosures, with one of the Gopurams on the background. This is the enlargement of part of the scan of a slide taken in July-August, 1996.
