Tiruchirapalli, 1996: One of the Gopurams of the Jambukeswarar temple 3.

Description

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu: One of the Gopurams (temple towers) of the Jambukeswarar temple, that is dedicated to deity Shiva, and that it is one of the five major Hindu temples dedicated to this deity in Tamil Nadu. These five temples correspond to the five elements, and the Jambukeswarar temple is the one that represents water. As many other Hindu temples in the South of India, it is an example of Dravidian architecture, but it is particularly impressive. In particular, it dates back to the 2nd century and it has five enclosures. Here a close view of the façade of the Gopuram. This is the enlargement of part of the scan of a slide taken in July-August, 1996.
